Description

Pearl Jam's ninth and newest album Backspacer is getting a lot of attention thanks to their promotional campaign with Target stores, but is Backspacer all its chalked up to be? Emerging in the late 90s, American rock band Pearl Jam has been making grunge, rock, and post-grunge albums for almost a full decade. Pearl Jam is best known for their 1991 smash-hit album Ten, which featured some of their most well known hits like "Alive," "Jeremy," and "Even Flow." While most would agree Pearl Jam ultimately had their heyday back in the 90s, hardcore Pearl Jam fans would no doubt disagree. Backspacer features original front man Eddie Vedder, showcasing his alluring yet sometimes uncomfortable vocals like never before. Combine this with a new wave rock sound, happier tone, and cleaner playing techniques and you've got a Pearl Jam album that stands out from all the others. The first single release "The Fixer" has been climbing the Billboard Rock charts since its release in August. Overall Backspacer has received favorable reviews from music critics and fans alike. Pearl Jam's Backspacer may seem overly commercial to some old time PJ fans, but for those who invite their musical progression and can appreciate an all around good rock album, check out Backspacer.

Press Reviews

The whole album has a pleasurable mix of lean, mean rock'n'roll and pensive ballads that reflect both the state of the world and the band's place in it. Billboard (p.52)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's largely characterised by joyous new wave-influenced rock'n'roll, and for the first time in their 19-year career, Pearl Jam actually sound -- whisper it -- fun. Q (Magazine) (p.119)

The band hasn't put together a trifecta this energized and from-the-gut in a decade... Spin (p.76)
