Description

Third is utterly riveting and endlessly absorbingIt demands attention, requiring effort on the part of the listener, as this defies any conventions on what constitutes art pop apart from one key tenant, one that is often attempted yet rarely achieved: it offers music that is genuinely, startlingly originalAll Music Guide.
Third is shaping up to be the must have album of the year.

Press Reviews

4 stars out of 5 -- "Listening to Portishead has always been like floating through a waking dream, but now the sleek edges have atrophied into a dusty chaos, and it's all the more beautiful and perfect for the change. Alternative Press (p.136)

Beth Gibbons' spectral vocals linger atop eerie, warped pulses of music to create a swirl of melancholia." -- Grade: B+ Entertainment Weekly (p.119)

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "THIRD is an unexpected yet totally impressive return.....Portishead mix up dub, break beats, cathedral organ, Moroccan drones and even surf rock into a headphone album for sour times. Rolling Stone (p.80)

Comments about ISLAND Portishead - Third:

Portishead seek to alienate the listener - industrial sounds, annoying watery weak singing, songs stopping abruptly - amazingly it all adds up to an entralling muscial experience.

Comments about ISLAND Portishead - Third:

After long, 11years hiatus the've back with moving CD. Better than two acclaimed albums from the 90's. Delicate electronic beats, extraordinary vocal performances by Beth Gibbons and melodic charm. Passionate but cold Bristol music.
