Description

Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, its a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelins demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummers chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Hommes projects more than Grohl's or Jones', its largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Hommes predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on Interlude with Ludes, theres the sense that, like a great improv troupe, the trio freaked out then retained the best moments, trimming away the indulgence and experiments, leaving behind intrinsically, grippingly musical hard rock, where power is secondary to interplay. And while there are melodies and hooks that certainly dig into the skull, what impresses is chemistry, how the three play together, how they instigate each other, and how they spur each other on, to the point where their familiar tropes sound fresh -- as on Scumbug Blues, where Jones Trampled Underfoot clavinet intertwines with Grohls avalanche and Hommes rigorous psychedelia - creating guitar rock thats at once classicist and adventurous and undeniably thrilling..

Comments about UMGD/INTERSCOPE THEM CROOKED VULTURES - Them Crooked Vultures:

It's a good album but I don't reach for it that often. One of those albums suited for the digital world where you can cherry pick the music you like to listen to and leave the rest on your drive to gather electronic dust.

My favourites are the tracks when the band slip into the heavy blues. Scumbag Blues, which is reminiscent of Cream, and Warsaw.. which chugs enthusiastically along for over seven minutes.

Comments about UMGD/INTERSCOPE THEM CROOKED VULTURES - Them Crooked Vultures:

This new supergroup isn't all the thrilling originality I expected from a supergroup like this. It's dominated by the early style of Josh Homme (vocals and guitar), but comes with engaging new musical compositions from both Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones, and it's all in all a really great record. They don't shift the focus around like you could expect from a "supergroup", but sort of get along around the way which makes it a very well-composed record, with originality in almost every track. The lyrics is kind of standard rock-lyrics with catchy parts but not mind-blowing.

Comments about UMGD/INTERSCOPE THEM CROOKED VULTURES - Them Crooked Vultures:

I was delused by last QOTSA record "Era Vulgaris", and I had a lot of expectations on this project.
I put this album in the cd-player and push play, just after first 3 songs I had feeling i'm not gonna be upset by Josh 2 times in a row.
Dave's drum with JPJ bass makes an awsome rhythmic section and Josh fantasy as riff & solo maker is back near SFTD splendour.

Comments about UMGD/INTERSCOPE THEM CROOKED VULTURES - Them Crooked Vultures:

The album has quite a few obvious hits if youre into Queens of the Stoneage as it builds mostly on the direction taken long ago by Josh Homme and associates. Which is of course great about the album but it still leaves a slightly static impression and the thought that this might as well have been just another Queens-album. You would think that such big characters as John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl would mark themselves more explicitly playing together.
Admittedly, just a few times you might be able to spot some 70s rock influence but you will have to listen hard for it. It´s easier to identify Grohl on the record when he pounds the drums with that furious energy you also know from Songs for the Deaf.
Bottom line: It´s a great buy so enjoy !

The best superband ever couldn't disappoint me. Nirvana + Led Zeppelin + Queens The Stone Age = Them Crooked Crew.

Don't expect it to make a big impact at the first listening, you have to listen to every guitar riff, every drum beat... and then you'll love this album.

Comments about UMGD/INTERSCOPE THEM CROOKED VULTURES - Them Crooked Vultures:

This album contains the best elements of it's three members! Ghrols animal, raw percussion style. Homme's carefully crafted and thoughtful lyrics, and Jones's experence and multi-instumentalism that really brings it all together. The band excudes coolness and lared in each track you can certainly hear the blues, psychedelic and rock and roll influences coming through.
Sadly if your expecting something groundbreaking - this is not for you. It is very much a melting pot of the three bands involved, nonetheless a savage album for all rock and indie fans that bring back the days when bands truely used to ROCK!!!

How do you review a quality line-up like this,on paper awesome, so you think how will it sound. First off as Homme is the vocalist and lead guitarist, it does sound like qotsa (not a bad sound I might add). Grohl ,as we all know, is happy behind the kit (Duracell bunny springs to mind?)off setting Jpj's rhythms, this in turn allows Homme the freedom to have fun. This album does sound like these guys had fun in the studio putting together these tracks, the down side is, how long for the follow up. This only leaves you wanting more......
