Description

The controversial rapper Eminem makes a critically acclaimed movie debut in 8 Mile, directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A Confidential and Wonder Boys). This urban drama tells the tale of a young man nicknamed Rabbit who is trapped in a downward spiral at both home and work, living in a trailer park with an alcoholic mother and working in a metal pressing plant in Detroit. Rabbit is admired by his friends for his rapping ability, and is pushed to appear in the weekly rap battles that take place at the local Shelter. Rabbit, though lacks confidence, and is troubled by the pressure placed upon him by himself and his friends. Only when he meets a girl, who he thinks will support him, does he map out a path that may lead to some sort of future.

Eminen is superb in the lead role and supported by an excellent cast, and a tightly woven story which maintains pace and drama throughout. 8 Mile provides a fascinating insight into urban America, and the anger of youth living in deprived circumstances, where family structures no longer exist, and violence is a daily occurrence. One of the best films of 2002.

Plot Synopsis

Controversial rapper Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) makes his big screen debut with 8 MILE, a bracing drama directed by the increasingly audacious Curtis Hanson. Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith, Jr., better known as Rabbit, is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger), Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping, Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend Future (Mekhi Phifer) is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before, giving him another chance at redemption. Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment, shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto, proves that the issue is no longer about race, it's about money. Eminem delivers a bold performance as a troubled youngster trying to find his place in a harsh, cruel world.
