Finally George A. Romero's 1978 zombie classic has been given the treatment it so rightly deserves. Vastly superior to the recent remake, this was the movie that would forever define the role of the zombie in cinema.

Romero first explored the notion of the undead in his low-budget debut, Night Of The Living Dead, a highly reactionary piece exploring many of the issues bubbling over in American society at that time, from the civil rights movement to the war in Vietnam.

In 1978, however, the World was a different place - the war was over and the American people were finding hope again - in the form of disco music and consumerism. People were building their own little safe havens at home, away from the horrors that they knew were out in the real world.

So, trading the political for the satirical in Dawn Of The Dead, the protagonists literally barricade themselves indoors, in a shopping mall where all mod-cons are at their disposal, where they are free to spend their time deciding what to have for dinner or which coloured shirt to wear instead of having to face the chaos and bedlam that is surrounding them. However, our heroes quickly discover that life gets pretty boring when you have everything at your fingertips and sooner or later you have to face the harsh realities of the society you live in.

Tom Savini's make-up effects are the real star of the show however as he starts here what has now become an ongoing contest in horror films to come up with increasingly bizarre and inventive death scenes. In Dawn we have decapitation by helicopter rotor, screwdriver through the ear and machete in face, to name but a few.

In short, none of the current wave of zombie films would have existed without the overwhelming influence of this film.

Romero's final fully-mixed and edited "Director's Cut", a tag which is often erroneously attributed to the "Extended Version" (a.k.a The Cannes Film Festival Version).

Disc Two: Extended Version - Originally created for use at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival, this version runs 12 minutes longer than the U.S. Theatrical Version. the extra minutes are comprised of various scene extensions and some additional gore scattered throughout. This version is often incorrectly referred to as the Director's Cut. While this cut was overseen by George Romero, his legitimate "Director's Cut" is the U.S. Theatrical Version.

Disc Three: European Version - When Dawn of the Dead was released in Europe, the film was re-edited by Co-Producer Dario Argento, with a running time of 118 minutes. This European Cut featured numerous dialogue extensions, trimmed scenes, a generally quickened pace as well as an increased amount of original music by composer, Goblin.
