Comments about Bringing Out the Dead:
Scorsese and Schrader team up for another New York story (they did Taxi Driver and Raging Bull) about paramedics working the night shift. Nicolas Cage is perfectly cast as the on edge paramedic and throughout the film he is accompanied by John Goodman, Tom Sizemore and in a career highlight performance, Ving Rhames. Patricia Arquette is Cage's moral counter weight and salvation and the story flips the dependancy each has for the other.
The characters are funny and tragic, optimistic and down-trodden. Flawed heroes, every one of them. The film is a modern tragic comedy. Editing is as usual for Scorcese pictures, done by Thelma Schoonmaker and is excellent, keeping the pace and keeping you engaged.
This movie has been almost forgotten, probably because it was not about gangsters or violence, but don't let that put you off as there is action and the dialogue is very sharp and entertaining.
The DVD picture and sound is very good. The dark city lit by artificial lights and the bright white of the paramedics is skillfully captured. The constant sounds of the city and the radio operator are another character in the film.
The DVD unfortunately has no extras apart from a short making of which is informative but limited.
All in all a stand out film that is essential viewing for fans of Scorsese or any of the actors.
Service and delivery comments:
