Comments about Hancock:
John Hancock (Will Smith). Like the best superheroes, Hancock can fly, is bulletproof, and has insurmountable strength. He uses these gifts to fight crime in Los Angeles and save people in distress. Unfortunately, he is also a drunk who leaves a trail of costly destruction behind during his lifesaving pursuits, and his constant sarcasm fails to win him friends. But after Hancock randomly saves his life, public relations executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) decides to give him a makeover and help the superhero change his image so that the police and citizens of Los Angeles will realize how much they need their seemingly inappropriate hero. All the while, Ray's wife, Mary (Charlize Theron)--who seems to simultaneously have a strange connection and aversion to Hancock--worries that her do-gooder husband will end up disappointed by Hancock's antics. The special effects are quite impressive, as Hancock flies through Los Angeles crashing into buildings, bursting through freeway signs, and flipping automobiles around as if they were wet noodles. Smith evokes a depth and warmth in Hancock; even when he's unpleasant and anti-social, it's clear that there is more to him. Bateman is well cast as a man who really does want to change the world for the better. And Theron is quite touching in her role as a wife to Ray, a mother to Aaron, and ultimately a saviour to Hancock.

Comments about Hancock:
If Sartre wrote a graphic novel about a Super Hero, it would probably have turned out like Hancock. It's a postmodern existential Superhero tale. With a refreshing 'everyday-ness' about it (the fact of the powers Hancock possesses is dealt with offhandedly, with no more 'specialness' than 'the grass is green' or 'the sky is blue', and the people about him aren't all that impressed and simply don't CARE), the story and 'world' of Hancock seems strangely believable while at the same time being about the completely impossible.
Hancock is a drunken, slobby, rude miscreant ... who also happens to have super powers. Anything he does to help people is done at half mast, and the damage he often causes mitigates totally against any good he might accomplish.
One day, he saves the life of a PR consultant, who then is moved by gratitude for his salvation from certain death and compassion for Hancock, who he sees as stuck in a vicious cycle with the public: He 'helps' in unhelpful ways, they reject him, and he in turn responds with more anti-social behaviour.
To say much more will spoil some of the twists, but suffice to say this film has amazing action sequences, laugh-out loud humour, some very touching and heartfelt scenes, and is overall everything a movie SHOULD be: entertaining. A keeper, in my books.
