Description
A woodcutter experiences a horrific series of events - an ambush, rape and murder. In the telling of the tale however, each of the four participants give different views of what actually happened - is any of them telling the truth?
Kurosawa's masterful film plays on the subjective nature of truth while unfurling a riveting tale of violence and greed.
The film was the first to alert western audiences to the riches of Japanese cinema, and was one of many of Kurosawa's films to be remade in Hollywood - as The Outrage, starring Paul Newman.
Winner of the Grand Prize at the Venice Film Festival and an Honorary Academy Award -- it was voted by the Board of Governors as the most outstanding foreign language film released in the United States during 1951. "Rashomon" also received two National Board of Review Awards in 1951: Best Director and Five Best Foreign Films of the Year.
