Description

Mix a cute young blogger with an older, weathered newspaper reporter and you have the protagonists for the thriller, State of Play. The gripping mystery/drama features Rachel McAdams as blogger Della Frye, and Russell Crowe as reporter Cal McAffrey. They both play well in the film, but McAdams' Frye is a bit naive and seems to be given some favoritism from the otherwise down-to-business editor, played by the gorgeous, if humorless Helen Mirren. You can see it coming as soon as Crowe's character disses the young blogger - the two are soon to be a team. Hollywood's cliché pairing of a 20-something ingénue with a 40-something superstar makes for some nice eye candy.

Truly, the superstar in this film is Robin Wright Penn, who takes over the screen with her stand-by-your-man portrayal of Anne Collins, wife of philandering Congressman Stephen Collins, played by Ben Affleck. It seems Stephen's mistress was thrown under a train and all the usual suspects are present in the film to detract any would-be detectives from easily figuring out this tight who-dunnit. If Crowe's long, Bohemian locks don't tickle you, throw in Jason Bateman's portrayal of the weasel Dominic Foy, and this film gets downright fun.

Plot Synopsis

A political conspiracy lies at the heart of this film starring Oscar winners Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, and Helen Mirren. A reporter (Crowe) in the nation's capital discovers a mess of lies when the mistress of a congressman (Affleck) is murdered. Kevin Macdonald (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND) directs this thriller based on the BBC miniseries of the same name.

Comments about UNIVERSAL State of Play:

Intelligent political thriller in the tradition of 1970's conspiracy thrillers.
