Description

Vampires have come "out of the coffin" and are now living among us. Surviving on synthetic blood, they no longer need human blood to survive. Or so it seems...

From Alan Ball, writer of the Oscar-winning Best Picture American Beauty and creator of the Emmy Award-winning HBO series Six Feet Under, comes the critically acclaimed world of True Blood, adapted from American author Charlaine Harris' The Southern Vampire Series featuring acclaimed novels Dead And Gone, A Touch Of Dead, Dead Until Dark and more. Episode directors include acclaimed moviemakers John Dahl (The Last Seduction) and Heathers helmer Michael Lehmann.

The small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, boasts a wide array of colourful locals. Meet Sookie Stackhouse (Academy Award winner Anna Paquin - The Piano), a sweet and innocent waitress who hides her powerful ability to read minds; Bill Compton (British actor Stephen Moyer), a 173-year-old vampire who's just moved back to town; Sookie's brother Jason (Aussie hearthrob Ryan Kwanten - Vinnie Patterson from Home And Away), a ladies' man who can't seem to stay out of trouble; tough-as-nails Tara, Sookie's loyal best friend; Sam, the owner of Merlotte's who tries to keep his feelings for Sookie to himself; Lafayette, a man about town who's always cooking up something illicit and "off the menu", and a quirky cast of characters who each hide their dark secrets in the shadows of night in this series that's like no other.

Comments about True Blood: Season 1:

This excellent vampire melodrama is set in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana where a psychic waitress falls for a 200 year old vampire. The story-lines are ridiculous but are beautifully played out through great writing and acting, especially from the wonderful Anna Paquin.
Season 1's main arc involves the world's adjustment to the knowledge that there are vampires living in the midst of humans and who have "come out of the coffin" now that a synthetic blood substitute, "Tru Blood" removes the need for them to harm humans (theoretically, at least)...oh and there's a serial killer terrorising "fang-bangers", humans who get a kick out of having sex with vampires.

The extras on the DVD are excellent, and as well as the usual commentaries there is a mockumentary charting the development of "Tru Blood" and the "coming out" of the vampire race.

The only downside is that with only 12 episodes, this HBO series will leave you wanting more.

I can't wait for Season 2!

Comments about True Blood: Season 1:

a brilliant series and unusual, the deep southern accent sometimes gets annoying but otherwise its addictive.
